Think of it this way: If you walk around the mall and see eight women, chances are, one of those women is going to have breast cancer.
That's the example oncologist Shailja Roy likes to give to her patients when talking about the realities of breast cancer.

The disease, she said, strikes more women than most people realize.

According to the National Cancer Institute, 12.2 percent of women born today will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime -- and the risk increases with age.

Early detection, Roy said, is the key to catching it while in the early -- and still easily managed -- stages.
