spoken like a true addict who doesnt have self-control.
Just remember that just because you cant control yourself doesnt mean that gaming should be outlawed.

I agree gambling can be a problem depending on the individual. I disagree with your statement that it could happen to anyone. Many personalities are less prone to have gambling problems.
The fact that your were a succussful business man probably means you are highly competitive, which unfortunately can be a bad quality when gambling. Competitve players often chase losses.

There was a thread begun by another player who had lost $35,000 in 5 mths, just 2-3 weeks ago (think name was "so").
I posted about the suicides, crime and bankruptcies that has occurred in the 6+ years since land casino was opened here. A young millionaire acquaintance won $250,000 in one night; then lost double that not long after. He banned himself for 2 years, but has lost around that again, so has banned himself again. He knows he can afford it, but is smart enough to know that he will lose all if he does not. So you are wise to recognise that stopping is the only thing you can do.
I suggest that you get rid of your credit cards, or your pc, or if not possible, then obtain software that stops casino software being downloaded onto your pc. It's too hard to stop on your own without taking ALL precautions. Make it easier on yourself!
My sons know to take away this pc once I begin losing (overall) online. I'm now more disciplined re land casino (just taking in $10-15 NO cards, when I go in for free restaurant meals) but I will HAVE TO ban myself for 2 years if I don't keep to that.
LOL! Since taking in just $10-l5 per time for 2-5c. slots, I've won $30 - $110 each time.

Find another addiction.
Walk away sir.
Even if you won MILLIONS you would not stop, would you.
As a cigarette addict I seem to be lucky.
It doesn't destroy my whole family while I indulge in it.
If you can, put it back together, be more selfish and determined than the addiction.
This one really is your call.

xzzx: You haven't lost everything: you still have your health, your talents (which made you a successful businessman), and most importantly an awareness and realization that you do have a problem.
I truly believe that the first and most important step in solving any personal addiction is the ability to realize that the problem exists. It is only at that point in time that one can begin to heal. You've done that - feel good about that and move on. What has happened in the past cannot be changed....only what happens now. Do not let allow yourself to dwell on something you cannot change.
I am one of those individuals that believes everything happens for a reason...so don't look back! Use the talents you used to make you successful the first time around and come back even stronger.
Best wishes to you.

Sorry, but it is your fault and you DONT have control. Thats a pretty obvious fact. If you keep denying that, you will never get over your addiction. It may be an addiction, but you started it yourself.

My land casino friend had a sympathetic family, so after vague suicide attempts (that only I knew about), he wasted yet another 2.5 years and another $15,000 of debt on gambling. He's starting to wake up and has not indulged for 2 mths because he's got no money. Had he not have such a kindly family, maybe he would have been forced to face reality sooner.
He did ban himself for 2 years, didn't die from the "disease"! He should have rebanned himself immediately but became delusional about winning big. I've observed that often ego is a factor, some thinking that they will come up with a system beating all the other great brains who have pondered this.
Having been involved with those severely disabled and/or in agonising pain, I think it a pity that so many conditions are now labelled "disease" as it trivialise true suffering usually not brought on by those afflicted.
We all make mistakes; one can learn more from them than when things go right. If we don't suffer the consequences of our stupid actions, as my friend above has not had to, then lessons just aren't learnt as quickly. The $l50,000 he lost was taxpayers money; very little of his own.
Good luck to you as you begin to reclaim your life again. You probably can't see the blessings you have right now...but I'm sure you are wise enough to be able to count them soon.
Get far away from anything gambling related is what I would suggest. Gamblers Anonymous is that board you should be visiting, not this one IMO.

xzzx,
Yours is a cautionary tale we need to hear...and to heed.
Thank you for the warning. All the best to you as you start to rebuild your life.
