View Thread : WOL drops doubleclick cookies? tsk tsk

The Original Mary
Max, I'm using Cookie Patrol by the Zone Alarm folks. Winneronline appears to be dropping Doubleclick spy cookies on me.

Please check into that.

Ahh, maybe that is why I found it on my system yesterday. I should say Ad-Aware found it.

ronp
I just found it again. Damn. Must be from here.

max
Hmmm. Well we don't like that. I'll pass this info on to the Pitboss, see if he knows what's going on.

Regards,
Max.

Ok, here's what I've heard back from our tech guys:

-------------------------
Unfortunately, we do use DoubleClick for some of our banner ads.

In August of 2002, DoubleClick settled an investigation into it's cookie usage policy by paying out $450,000 and adhereing to a government approved privacy policy. I haven't read the privacy policy, but I would guess that it allows DoubleClick to track browsers using cookies but they cannot link this with personal information aquired from the purchase of Acabus Direct.

For those concerned with being "tracked", Internet Explorer has a way to restrict cookie placement. Restricting DoubleClick cookies should not affect your browsing experience.

In IE,
1) click on TOOLS->INTERNET OPTIONS (or similar).
2) click on Secuity Tab
3) click on the RESTRICTED SITES icon.
4) click the [ SITES ] button.
5) type in:
- doubleclick.com and click [ ADD ]
- flycast.com and click [ ADD ]
- valueclick.com and click [ ADD ]
6) click [ OK ]

This should cause all cookies sent by DoubleClick to be rejected and you will no longer receive "spy cookie" warnings about DoubleClick from Ad-Aware or other such programs.

Hope this helps.
